BANG! And there it was. Lex Autolease, number one of the FN50 rundown of the top leasing companies since 2008, was disposed of its top slot by the amalgamated ALD Automotive | LeasePlan business, soon to be renamed Ayvens.
The new FN50 was announced at the annual FN50 event in London on Wednesday 01 November 2023.
To be honest, it was no real surprise since the amalgamation of ALD and Leaseplan was always going to create a juggernaut of a leasing business in much the same way that the merger of Lex Autolease and Halifax Bank of Scotland did back in 2008.
What was significant was that the majority of the top 10 leasing companies are funders in the leasing broker market, holding a 64% total market share between them. The top 10 also included Leasys, which merged with Free2Move earlier this year.
The significance of the broker contribution to the top flight funders was recognised in the FN50 for the first time.
A feature written by Sarah Tooze, called Brokers play significant role in fleet market, looked at the volume brokers introduced to the market, with 24 leasing companies providing broker figures.
The report reckoned that 12.9% of overall market volume is provided by leasing brokers, and this does not include the volume introduced to the captive finance houses.
Former chair of the BVRLA Leasing Broker Committee and founder of Synergy Car Leasing, Paul Parkinson, told Sarah that brokers play a significant role in the supply chain and should be recognised for their growing presence in the market.
Other leasing brokers featured in the article included Mike Manners of CBVC Vehicle Management, Andy Bruce of Fleet Alliance, and Keith Hawes of Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, winner of the Broker News Broker of the Year Award 2023.
Brokers with a funded fleet included Bridle Group, which was placed 36 in the FN50 with a fleet size of 2647, AMT Vehicle Rental at 38 (2,342) and The AAM Group (Best Car Finder), led by new CEO Duncan Chumley, at 40 (1,916).
Four of the top 10 leasing companies are funder partners of Broker News: Lex Autolease, Arval UK, Novuna Vehicle Solutions, and Leasys, while Broker News partner Fleet Procure was also a sponsor of the FN50.
