Will Trump insist the UK bans Chinese cars and vans?

A disturbing report in The i Paper suggests that as part of the US-UK trade deal engineered by the Prime Minister, President Trump might insist on the banning of Chinese car sales in the UK. The ban would be on the grounds of national security, something which the US has already agreed to implement from 2027. The fears surround vehicle manipulation directly from China, with the potential to cause traffic chaos.

Any such ban would be a disaster for the UK’s move to cleaner vehicles ahead of the outright ban on petrol and diesel cars in 2030. BYD, for example, has already made significant inroads into the UK market, the brand being the fastest climber in April. BYD and its fellow Chinese brands offer drivers choice at a lower cost than traditional OEMs in the market, and as our story indicates, Chinese brands are more readily accepted by fleets now. Will a ban happen? I think it unlikely. But it’s certainly one to watch.
