OVO Energy has made a new home electricity tariff – Drive + Anywhere – available, which promises to slash electric vehicle (EV) charging costs.

Following on from a successful trial earlier this year, the Drive + Anywhere tariff offers customers a flat rate of 5p per kWh to charge their car, regardless of time of day.

Electricity customers regularly switch to an Economy 7 or Economy 10 tariff, reducing electricity costs overnight, and thereby keeping how much it costs to recharge their EV under control. However, the new tariff means customers can save around 70% on charging costs, with the EV-tailored package.

By using smart charging technology by Kaluza, the ‘type-of-use’ tariff is the first of its kind in the UK and means EV drivers can cover a year’s worth of driving for less than £100 – based on an average UK mileage of less than 7,500 miles per annum.

By splitting out the type of use, customers can recharge their EV at any time of day at extremely low cost, while not shifting the expense on to other household usage.

Customers are credited back the amount of electricity saved via smart EV charging each month, with Kaluza’s algorithms optimising EV charging for times of lowest demand on the grid, all controlled via a mobile app.

Chris Russell, managing director of OVO Drive, at OVO Energy said:

“Our OVO Drive + Anytime trial in January was a real success and we’re thrilled to be rolling out this pioneering new plan nationwide.

“To be able to offer our EV-driving customers an affordable and hassle-free way of joining us in our mission to achieve a carbon zero future is amazing. We want to encourage the use of electric vehicles as a carbon-conscious lifestyle choice, and it should be easy and accessible – with the help of Kaluza’s cutting edge technology, our new Drive + Anytime plan embodies that vision perfectly.”
