• Electric van sales go backwards for third successive month
  • August van sales overall are up
  • Ford LCV performance in marked contrast to car performance in August
  • Stellantis top of the electric van charts

REGISTRATIONS of battery electric vans fell for the third successive month in August as the vast majority of businesses reject what’s on offer in favour of traditional diesel vans.

So far this year, diesel and (increasingly) petrol van sales have seen their market share improve to 95.0% up from 94.3% a year ago.

The ZEV Mandate for LCVs requires manufacturers to hit a 10% electric mix this year. However, OEMs can borrow from the next two years which have targets of 16% in 2025 and 24% in 2026.

The forward borrowing possibility means the targets should be taken as a whole, rather than on individual years.

The reduction in electric van registration is a double blow, because total LVC sales grew in August, up 1.7% against the same month last year. Year-to-date the registrations are up 2.7%.

Winners and losers in the August LCV market 2024

In contrast to Ford’s new car performance, the launch of the new Transit Custom and the addition of several new variants has helped its van sales in the first eight months of 2024. Registrations are up 6.3% year-to-date which equates to a rise of more than 4,000 vans. Ford accounts for 32% of the LCV market which is four percentage points more than the next three brands (Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Renault) combined.

Despite a strong year-to-date from Vauxhall (up 1,015 units), sister brands at Stellantis have performed poorly with Citroen down 3,793 units, Peugeot down 1,318 units and Fiat near level.

However, Stellantis has claimed the top two positions in the best-selling electric vans ranking with Peugeot and Vauxhall having sold 4,901 eLCVs year-to-date.

Stellantis accounts for almost a third of all vans (excluding 4x4s and pick-ups) sold in the UK so far this year with a market share of 29.90%, equating to 58,700 vans registered in 2024.
