• Electric vans increase in November – but remain nearly 50% short of target
  • Ford Transit, new Ford Transit Custom and Ford Ranger at top of LCV sales YTD
  • November van sales second highest on record
  • Toyota results look poor

ELECTRIC van registrations increased in November. But the result was not by enough to return the year-to-date figure to positive. In the first 11 months of 2024, electric LCVs accounted for 5.3% of the market against a 5.5% share a year ago and still well short of the Government’s 10% target with one month to go.

Last month was the second highest November on record with more than 30,000 LCVs registered, an increase of 10.5% over the same figure last year. Year-to-date, LCV registrations are up 4.1%.

Ford dominates with vans and pickups

Market leader Ford continues to go from strength to strength in LCVs, unlike its car performance. Not only does it occupy the top three positions in the year-to-date best seller ranking, but the Ford Ranger, a pick up in a shrinking sector, outsells every other van beside its stablemates the Transit Custom and the Transit.

So far this year Ford has registered more than 105,000 LCVs which is 32% of the market and more than Vauxhall, Volkswagen and Renault combined.

Standing out for the opposite reason is Toyota

Oh dear, Toyota. The Japanese OEM has been enduring a poor year in both cars and vans. Sources have told Broker News that supply is being managed to reduce the impact of any ZEV Mandate related fines. However, Toyota, which sells the Hilux pickup, may also be impacted by that sector’s recent decline. This decline is likely to continue next year as the Government has stated that double-cab LCVs will be classed as cars in future for benefit-in-kind tax purposes. This move is expected to reduce the popularity of pickup trucks.
