GREEN number plates – or, at least, a flash of green – will denote electric vehicles from today, 08 December 2020.

The government hopes the introduction of the green plates will help raise awareness of the growing number of electric vehicles.

November saw a 122.4% rise in battery electric vehicle registrations, to take 9.1% of market share – just five percentage points behind diesel (source: SMMT.)

The new-style green plates will help drivers benefit from local initiatives such as cheaper parking and cost-free entry into zero-emission zones, believes the Department of Transport.

We are going further and faster than any other major economy to decarbonise transport, improving air quality in our towns and cities in the process and harnessing the power of clean, green technology to end the UK’s contribution to climate change by 2050.

Transport Minister Rachel Maclean

The new number plates can be retro-fitted to existing cars and vans provided there are no tailpipe emissions.
