Name: Beth Beasleigh

Role: Head of Compliance

How long in the role? Almost two years

Current drive: Audi Q4 e-tron

What drew you to compliance?

Compliance isn’t typically a career people dream about doing when they grow up. But for me? It feels like what I was born to do and suits me perfectly. Even at school I enjoyed analysing information and following the rules. In compliance, I found a genuine sense of purpose.

What route did you take to get to your current role?

I studied Politics at Leeds University. Back then, I had ambitions of becoming Prime Minister, but soon figured out that probably wasn’t the best plan!

After graduating and visiting dozens of stands at the university careers fair, I did a 6 month stint for a brewery in credit control before going travelling.

When I returned, I moved to Manchester and joined ThinkSmart – a technology leasing broker. What was meant to be a temporary Collections Officer role, turned into 16 years of honing my skills at ThinkSmart.

The role at ThinkSmart gave me a great grounding. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to get involved in every aspect of the business. I took up various development opportunities too, which provided an understanding of the entire customer journey from every business function.

In 2014, the business set up a separate compliance function and I became Compliance and Customer Escalation Manager. There were a lot of regulatory changes at that time – most notably the introduction of GDPR – which I became heavily involved in implementing. Finally, I was appointed Head of Compliance in 2018 and continued in that position for 5 years.

So what made you join loveelectric?

A chance meeting at an FLA dinner in 2022. I was there as a guest of an insurer and sat next to Steve Tigar – loveelectric’s CEO & Founder – and we had a great chat. Then, a year later, Steve got in touch to ask some general compliance questions and asked me to do some consulting work. Subsequently, I was then offered a permanent role as Head of Compliance at loveelectric.

With ThinkSmart winding down the leasing side of its business, I felt it was the right time to take the experience I’d gained and start afresh at loveelectric – ‘battle-ready’. It’s a great lesson in positive networking – you never know where it might lead!

How do you find working in the leasing broker sector?

The leasing vehicle broker industry and its specifics are very different to the wider leasing industry I had experienced before. I was amazed at just how friendly and collaborative the sector is. Despite being a competitive market, it really feels like we’re all on the same team – particularly after the Supreme Court’s ruling on commission disclosures in 2024.

Beth’s car journey – from dreaming of a Viper to parking an Audi

Dodge Viper

I didn’t know whether to share this or not – but I actually couldn’t drive until two years ago! I just never got around to learning. At 17, I was more interested in Wigan’s nightlife and because I’ve always lived in cities, I convinced myself I didn’t need a car. That said, there were two posters on my wall as a teenager – one of Take That! and one of a bright red Dodge Viper.

My Dad and I used to visit car shows together a lot when I was younger. As a real enthusiast, he was pretty disappointed it took me 41 years to get behind the wheel of my own car! I started off in a MINI but have recently upgraded to an Audi Q4 e-tron. I’m still getting used to the size difference. It’s fair to say I became far too familiar with the Fair Wear & Tear guide after my first few attempts to park it!

What does a typical day look like as Head of Compliance?

No day is the same, that’s what’s so great. Aside from the day to day compliance responsibilities, often I’ll be supporting our customer-facing teams with queries to ensure the best possible customer experience. As we’ve continued to scale, I’ve been across various projects, including looking at different growth opportunities with our panel of lenders and customer retention.

Our whole team is remote so I’m usually home-based. But we have regular meet ups in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Face to face time is important to keep the team motivated and pulling in the same direction.

And you’ve been involved with the BVRLA supporting its used EV campaign recently?

Yes, loveelectric is extremely supportive of the BVRLA happyEVafter campaign. Used EVs are incredibly important to the success of EV adoption. I was invited to attend the BVRLA’s Parliamentary training in June, which has been invaluable in co-ordinating our lobbying approach.

Most recently, Steve and I attended the Industry Champions Parliamentary Reception – a great opportunity to celebrate the great work being done by the BVRLA and wider industry. It was also a great opportunity to highlight the mounting challenges facing the industry – despite the government’s commitment to Net Zero by 2050. loveelectric has also been working closely with local MPs, including Dr Scott Arthur who has offered his support to a number of BVRLA initiatives.

Beth Beasleigh and the loveelectric team

What’s it like working at loveelectric ?

Absolutely brilliant! Every day there’s something new and I really enjoy that. It‘s a very welcoming environment – the team are incredibly smart, driven and collaborative. Because it’s a fairly small team, every individual is involved and has a voice. Plus, there’s a strong focus on personal development.

Do you feel that automotive and broking is attractive to women?

Whilst this industry may appear male dominated, my experience has been the opposite since joining loveelectric. In my day-to-day role, I’m mainly in contact with other women – especially at the funding partners we work with. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some brilliant women in this industry who know how to get things done – lots of whom have been featured on Women in Broking!

At loveelectric, our senior leadership team is a pretty even split. There are three women (including myself) and five men. Women are also well represented on the sales side. Our female Senior Account Executive is one of the highest performing employees at the company and accounts for a very high proportion of the new clients we bring on.

And finally, what might surprise people about you?
