FUTURE of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, recently convened with key industry stakeholders at a round table event to address the barriers hindering the widespread adoption of electric vans and explore governmental support mechanisms for this critical transition.

Chaired by the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), the discussion brought together representatives from the UK’s prominent fleet operators, trade associations, and government departments. The session focused on identifying sector-specific solutions required to accelerate the shift to zero-emission vans.

Toby Poston, BVRLA Chief Executive, emphasised the collaborative nature of the event, stating:

“Constructive conversations such as this round table bring our sector and Government closer together. The needs of our sector are as diverse as they are plentiful, and we welcome the open dialogue and ongoing support of influential representatives such as Minister Greenwood.”

He added that the discussions encompassed a broad range of topics, from charge point infrastructure and regulatory burdens to the ZEV mandate, noting “a genuine sense of positivity in the room, and a shared commitment to help take the sector forward.”

Minister Greenwood reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting British businesses and vanmakers.

“It was great to join the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association and van fleet leaders from across the UK to discuss how we can speed up the switch to zero emission vans,” she commented.

The Minister highlighted recent government initiatives, including a £120 million allocation to support the rollout of zero-emission vans, new legislation to ease licence rules, and reforms aimed at reducing grid connection delays. These measures form part of a broader £2.3 billion government investment dedicated to facilitating the transition to electric vehicles, aligning with the “Plan for Change” to bolster British automakers, safeguard employment, and secure future economic stability.

The comprehensive dialogue explored further governmental actions to support zero-emission van uptake and addressed emerging challenges faced by fleets. Ongoing engagement between the sector and government is anticipated, with potential for further regulatory or policy adjustments in the coming weeks, coinciding with the expected announcement of the Government’s Industry Strategy and the outcome of its Comprehensive Spending Review.
