TOYOTA, master of the hybrid and the hydrogen fuel cell, is now adding battery electric power to its new car armoury.
The company says it will preview the new battery electric car soon, but for now all we have is the outline silhouette of an SUV model (above).
As yet, Toyota has not named the vehicle, saying only that it is based on its new e-TNGA vehicle architecture.
The basic architecture e-TNGA provides a number of fixed points while others can vary. This approach, says Toyota, allows variance in vehicle width, length, wheelbase and height.
The e-TNGA platform can also accommodate front, rear or all-wheel drive, with a wide range of battery and electric motor capacities to suit various vehicle types and usage profiles.
The new model has already been developed, Toyota has confirmed. The new electric SUV will be built in Japan at its ZEF plant.
