OCTOPUS Energy, the UK’s largest energy supplier, and BYD, the world’s leading EV manufacturer, have today unveiled the “Power Pack Bundle”.
Launched at Octopus Energy’s Energy Tech Summit, it’s hailed as the UK’s first integrated vehicle-to-grid (V2G) solution, promising drivers free home EV charging and significant cost savings.
The Power Pack idea has been in beta form for over a year as the Octopus V2G offering, but this is the first time it has been bundled with a V2G enabled car.
The Power Pack Bundle, available for under £300 a month through Octopus Vehicle Leasing, encompasses:
- a leased V2G-ready BYD Dolphin,
- a state-of-the-art bi-directional Zaptec Pro charger,
- and exclusive access to a smart tariff from Octopus Energy.
Octopus says the combination empowers EV owners to transform their vehicles into dynamic energy assets, fundamentally altering the economics of electric driving.
The energy company says it has the potential to slash annual energy bills by £620 compared to standard tariffs, and save nearly £1,000 annually against traditional petrol vehicles. The core of this offering lies in V2G technology, which enables EVs to not only draw power from the grid but also intelligently dispatch electricity back during peak demand. This bidirectional flow optimises energy consumption, reduces reliance on fossil fuel power plants, and enhances grid stability, without compromising the car’s drivability.
Powered by Octopus Energy Group’s proprietary Kraken tech platform, the Power Pack Bundle ensures an effortless experience for customers. Drivers simply plug in their vehicle overnight, and the automated system handles the rest, guaranteeing free home charging for every mile driven throughout the lease period. A key differentiator of this offering is the V2G technology being built directly into the BYD Dolphin, eliminating the need for costly first-generation external V2G chargers and paving the way for widespread adoption.
"Bi-directional charging is the game-changer for drivers and the grid. By using some of the battery’s spare capacity to help balance the grid, we can offer free driving. V2G is going to revolutionise our energy system and help drive costs down."
Greg Jackson, Founder of Octopus Energy Group Tweet
Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, added: “We’re thrilled to officially launch our V2G project with Octopus Energy and Kraken. BYD is fully committed to making intelligent, innovative, sustainable technologies available to our customers, and this project will allow them to unlock the full potential of electric vehicles – not just as transport but as dynamic assets that can play a key role in supporting the grid. Together with Octopus Energy, we’re enabling EV owners to play an active role in the energy ecosystem, reducing costs and increasing the resilience of renewable power systems.”
The Power Pack Bundle is slated for availability later this year and will also be made available to Motability customers.
