PAUL Millican was introduced to Fleet Alliance when he travelled up to the broker’s HQ to help two of his clients on business tenders for new vehicles.

The fleet management specialist impressed him, before he had even considered becoming an Appointed Representative.

Paul’s background had been as a cost and procurement consultant, looking for the efficiencies that would make the difference to his clients.

“Rather accidentally, my consultancy work took me further and further into automotive and fleet management, so I ended up doing an advanced diploma with the ICFM (now the AFP) and also became a Fellow of The Association of Fleet Professionals,” explains Paul, “while also doing plenty of work with the cost and carbon reduction company Auditel.”

So what brought Paul Millican to Fleet Alliance?

Back to the tender with Fleet Alliance: while he was there Paul found out about the route to becoming a Fleet Alliance Appointed Representative.

“I then thought about all the up to 100 vehicle fleets I had walked away from – because they weren’t the size where I offered full fleet consultancy – and thought there’s a real opportunity being missed.

“That opportunity was bringing fleet consultancy to SME fleets. I think there’s real scope to build a good business on the back of that.”

Having discussed the idea further with Laura Muir, Head of Appointed Representatives & Partner at Fleet Alliance, Paul started as an official Fleet Alliance AR at the beginning of 2026.

Paul says he was greatly attracted by the benefits of partnering with an established, award-winning leasing and fleet management business. That was key.

But the AR model also enabled him to focus on customer relationships while leveraging Fleet Alliance’s infrastructure, compliance, funding panel and operational support.

He says: “I’m not trying to supply a business with a single van or car. I’m trying to prospect companies with 10+ company vehicles and deliver those for them. I’m aiming to build a significant business, with real long-term value.  I’m trying to emulate what my AR colleague Chris Rowthorn is already doing: building a business with equity in it.”

Paul’s experience of being a Fleet Alliance AR

There are plenty of changes Paul is making. First off are his LinkedIn connections: these were all large corporates and Paul needed to reach out to SMEs. So he engaged a BDM during the early part of the summer to develop these connections through networking events and so on, while Paul has joined a regular Lincolnshire networking event, near where he is based.

In the pipeline are three fleet leasing agreements and the promise to provide a “gold-plated experience” to those SME firms he engages with.

“I want to help businesses navigate the transition to lower-emission mobility solutions, and with my previous consulting experience with larger corporates, I’m ideally placed to do that.”
