• 74 plate change pushes up SMMT registrations just 1%
  • But searches for PCH up 43% on Leasing.com comparison site
  • Average rental was 24 months/5,000 miles with an increased rental to £321 from August’s £316
  • Nissan dominates with two in the top three places

IN September’s important plate-change month the SMMT’s latest statistics showed registrations climbing by just 1% year on year. Overall, though, for the first nine months registrations are up by 4.3%.

However, consumer sentiment is at odds with the bleaker overall picture on private demand for leasing products such as Personal Contract Hire.

While September’s SMMT figures showed a drop in demand of nearly 2%  and -9% year on year, the variety of discounted leasing offers saw enquiry volumes up 43% year on year at the leasing deal aggregator website.

Paul Harrison, Chief Partnerships Officer at Leasing.com, said:

“Our data showed a more positive trend with total enquiry volumes on Leasing.com up 43% when compared to September last year. A ‘push’ market is in full effect as manufacturers offer further discounts with the first year’s ZEV mandate now looming. Nissan enjoyed a particularly strong September in the PCH market as the Juke joined the ever-present Qashqai towards the top of our monthly league table, with the Vauxhall Astra completing the top three.”

Market watch special: Skoda Octavia

With saloon and estate variants available from a variety of leasing brokers for a little over £200 per month, Skoda’s ever-green Octavia finished September in Leasing.com’s top 10 most popular vehicles. Not much money for a terrifically good value car.
